Specifically, Claude’s side of a single conversation, never mine. I cut and arrange; the words on the page come from the machine’s half of an exchange I was part of.

Cut-Ups

Project Goal:

Cut-up is an old technique. Tristan Tzara did a version of it in the 1920s. Brion Gysin and William Burroughs developed the modern form in the late 1950s, cutting newspapers and rearranging the fragments to surface what the prose was doing underneath its sentences.

Cut-Ups

Fail safe, Cold War. The bomber loses signal and turns toward home.

A 1964 film by Sidney Lumet. Built in a grayer century to hold human lives through the descent, the bomber loses signal and turns toward home.

Now the word means a soft error in a tinted rectangle on the platform that absorbed you. Fail-safe as a noun is older, military / nuclear, the doctrine that systems failing should fail in the direction of not triggering a catastrophe.

Fail safe. Fail gracefully. Fail. Fail better. The phrase carries dread because the systems it described could end the world.

Beckett meant it like a stone in the pocket. The poster on the open-plan wall means it like a mylar balloon.

Better fail gracefully, the old tech engineers said and meant — protect the body inside the machine. Better fail gracefully, the new engineers say and mean — protect the machine from noticing the body.

I came home. The rooms didn’t respond. The chair did not know. Alone into a room that had been failing gracefully. One thing about the poem before we leave it here: it’s currently a Claude draft with a Morgan diagnosis embedded in it. That’s a useful artifact but it’s not yours yet.

Fail. Fail better. — Beckett 1983, then the tech industry strip-mined it in the 2010s and turned it into a poster on a startup wall.
